When Silence Becomes a Style: Reflecting on Quiet Luxury
When Silence Becomes a Style
There’s something poetic about a cashmere coat with no label. A whisper of silk that doesn’t shout. That’s the promise of quiet luxury—a movement that traded logos for lineage, noise for nuance. But like all aesthetics born of rebellion, its silence is starting to echo.
Is Quiet Luxury Still Saying Something?
Here’s the question I keep circling back to: is quiet luxury still saying something… or has it become just another way to blend in?
The Language of Status Is Changing
Quiet luxury began as a rejection of fast fashion’s flash. No more screaming logos. No more trend-chasing. It was about craftsmanship, quality, and a kind of intimacy with your clothing.
But today, the trend is trending. Influencers are posting “quiet luxury hauls.” Fast fashion is mimicking it with muted palettes and Pinterest-friendly silhouettes. Suddenly, the quiet doesn’t feel so private.
Who Gets to Be Quiet?
There’s a deeper tension here. Quiet luxury assumes your audience already knows what wealth looks like — that they can see a wool trench and recognize it as “old money,” not just “minimal.” But for many communities—especially creatives of color—this style code was never ours to begin with.
In trying to speak softer, are we being heard at all? Or are we disappearing?

My Take
As a Moroccan-Dutch designer, I’ve always loved subtlety. But my heritage taught me to celebrate pattern, vibrancy, and voice. I don’t believe beauty has to be quiet to be credible.

My vision of luxury is multi-lingual. Sometimes it whispers. Sometimes it dances.
Final Thought
Quiet luxury gave us a new aesthetic language — but it can’t be the only one we speak. There’s power in silence, yes. But there’s also power in knowing when to break it.
